Microsoft acknowledges Xbox 360 color space problem in last update, is working on a fix

While we found a lot of things to like in the last Xbox 360 dashboard upgrade, not everyone was happy after it finally rolled out in early December. We've received word from multiple owners who saw and reported color output problems since the beta began, and today Director of Programming Larry Hryb aka Major Nelson tweeted that the company is "aware of the color space issue w/ some Xbox video apps & are working on a fix". While that should take care of some issues, more recent reports also indicate problems with the HDMI output having HDCP authentication problems with certain TVs or receivers that blocks video output, as well as reports confirmed by Eurogamer that 1080p output appears to be downscaled to 720p internally. We're waiting for a response from Microsoft about these or any other issues and will let you know when we hear more. Let us know if you've noticed anything else in the new Xbox 360 update that needs tweaking in the comments below.

[Thanks, Vinny P, Brad R. and everyone else who sent this in]

GOP candidates vie for backing of SC military vets (AP)

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. ? Mitt Romney has ex-POW John McCain vouching for him. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum highlights his time on the Senate Armed Services Committee. And former House Speaker Newt Gingrich frequently calls himself an "Army brat" who grew up on military bases.

While Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Texas Rep. Ron Paul are the only GOP candidates to have worn a military uniform, all of the Republican presidential contenders are emphasizing their military ties these days in a state that's home to 413,000 veterans and eight military bases, with thousands of people on active duty.

"My purpose in life was to never be the president of the United States," Perry says as he campaigns ahead of South Carolina's primary Saturday. "My purpose has always been to serve my country and my state whenever they need or they call. That's our duty as Americans."

Perry's days as an Air Force pilot in the 1970s and his father's B-17 tail-gunner missions in World War II are staples of his South Carolina message as he looks to right his struggling campaign.

Paul, a flight surgeon in the 1960s who made his name as an antiwar congressman, is filling mailboxes with five-page letters that include a picture of him as a young draftee in a full-brimmed Air Force hat. "Let me begin by telling you that the troops know first and foremost that I am one of them," he writes.

There's a reason for the intensive courting: As long as South Carolina has been instrumental in deciding GOP nominees, the state's voters have rewarded candidates with military service. Every GOP primary winner since Ronald Reagan in 1980 has been a veteran.

This year may end that streak. Polls show Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, leading the pack. With the economy pushing U.S. involvement in foreign conflicts to the back of voters' concerns, some in South Carolina argue that GOP voters aren't pining for the biggest hawk this time.

"Financially, people are in dire straits right now," said state Sen. Lee Bright, a backer of Michele Bachmann before she left the race. "They realize that the more money we spend overseas the less money they are going to spend at home."

Nonetheless, most of the candidates have spent considerable time along the South Carolina coastline, wooing active-duty military members and veterans ? many of whom lean toward the GOP ? clustered around the bases near Charleston that for many years fueled the state's economy.

Perry, for one, has struck an aggressive posture lately, pledging that as president he would send troops back to Iraq to prevent Iran from exerting too much muscle in the region. On one upstate swing, he solemnly inspected a memorial garden and read markers to five Medal of Honor winners. He was accompanied by a former Marine captain with burn scars over half his body from the explosive device that hit his vehicle in Iraq and killed some of his comrades.

That veteran, Dan Moran, delivered a full-throated endorsement of Perry before a rapt audience. "For what it's worth, coming from somebody who had the honor and privilege of being able to spill some blood for his country, this is the man and this is the time," Moran said. "This country needs him."

Perry also has tried the personal touch, at one point pulling up a chair at voter Linwood Mizell's table to share more with the Army veteran and Purple Heart recipient.

Despite the special attention, Mizell held back. "I really haven't totally made up my mind," he said.

Romney, for his part, has campaigned with McCain, the 2008 GOP presidential nominee and Vietnam veteran, and seems to talk up the military everywhere he goes in the state.

"This is a proud military state," Romney said Saturday in Sumter. A day earlier, Romney was on Hilton Head Island for a veterans' event attended by hundreds.

Meanwhile, Santorum has traveled the state arguing that Democratic President Barack Obama is determined to shrink the Pentagon. The Republican insists the cuts will hurt national security and he often seeks out spouses and parents of military members to hear their concerns.

"I will not cut defense," Santorum pledged recently in Charleston. "I will not reduce the budget deficit by cutting the central role of the federal government. In fact, I will allow the Defense Department to grow to make sure that we are not cutting the benefits and the pay of our men and women in uniform."

HBT: Moyer, 49, signs minor league deal with Rockies

The veteran left-hander has found a new home.

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports, Jamie Moyer agreed to a minor league contract on Wednesday evening with the Colorado Rockies.

The deal includes an invitation to spring training, where Moyer will?presumably?get a shot at landing a spot in the Rockies? starting rotation. He?s 49 years old and coming off Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery, but Moyer should be at 100 percent health when camp opens next month and he registered a respectable 4.84 ERA and 1.10 WHIP across 111 2/3 innings in 2010 for the Phillies. If he can?t cut it as a starter at Rockies camp, he might be open to accepting a long-relief role. The deal could also contain an early-summer opt-out clause.

Moyer owns a 4.24 career ERA and 1.32 career WHIP over parts of 24 major league seasons.

S&P, Greece pressure euro zone to boost defenses (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Mass euro zone ratings downgrades are unlikely to shake up investors too much, but with Greek debt talks at an impasse, pressure has been loaded on the bloc to shore up its defenses and glimmers of optimism from last week have been firmly doused.

With the United States and Japan already downgraded from "AAA," the likes of France and Austria are in good company and Standard & Poor's ratings cuts had been flagged in December. Nonetheless, the upbeat tone that surrounded last week's strong Spanish bond auction now seems a distant memory.

"The euro zone crisis is now dominating market activity again, after a period in which better economic news from the U.S., and easier monetary policy in China had helped markets move higher," said Dominic Rossi, chief investment officer, equities, at Fidelity Worldwide Investment.

Shares in Asia fell more than 1 percent on Monday in reaction to the S&P downgrades and the euro hovered near a 17-month low against the dollar.

U.S. markets are closed for the Martin Luther King holiday, but the euro zone will not have to wait long for a test of investor appetite.

France will attempt to sell up to 8 billion euros of debt on Thursday and Spain will tap the market again after a successful bond auction last week where it raised twice as much as expected at lower borrowing costs.

Analysts put that success down to the flood of cheap 3-year money the European Central Bank pushed into the banking system in December. It will make the same offer in February, fostering hopes that it can avert a credit crunch and helped bolster struggling euro zone debt issuers to boot.

ECB Governing Council member Ewald Nowotny said on Sunday the central bank would do all it could to calm the situation after the downgrade.

"Everything that is within our possibilities will be done to bring about a relaxation (of the situation)," he said on television in Austria.

But the twin blows of the serial S&P downgrades and the stalled Greek bond swap talks have cast another pall of gloom. This time, Spain will try to sell longer-term debt, which could be tougher.

"While the market impact of the downgrades is unlikely to be very significant in the short term, they serve as a stark reminder that the euro area sovereign crisis is here to stay," analysts at RBS said. "We continue to expect the crisis to deepen eventually leading to further widening in spreads across countries vis-a-vis Germany."

After downgrading nine of the euro zone's 17 countries, S&P said it would decide shortly whether to do the same for the currency area's EFSF bailout fund. Ratings cuts for commercial banks are probably imminent too.

"Speculation around an EFSF downgrade will now grow, complicating its ability to raise capital and displace the ECB in the sovereign bond purchasing program," Rossi said. "Both the ECB and the IMF will get sucked further into central roles."

A senior euro zone official said the EFSF could retain its AAA rating with Standard & Poor's through higher guarantees from the euro zone's remaining triple A countries or lower lending capacity.

Still, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said on German radio on Monday that German guarantees for the EFSF were sufficient.

Negotiations with the banks on a bond swap scheme designed to eat into Greece's colossal debts are expected to restart on Wednesday with Athens warning of catastrophe if they fall apart.

Without a deal, a planned 130 billion euro Greek bailout of which the bond swap is a vital part will be fundamentally holed, raising the prospect of default in March when massive bond payments are due. That, rather than the long-anticipated S&P downgrades, looks to be the bigger worry for investors.

"At this stage, there is a growing risk of a coercive rather than voluntary debt restructuring, even though the latter is still our base case," said Joachim Fels, economist at Morgan Stanley.

SENSE OF URGENCY

Euro zone leaders do seem to be gripped with a sense of urgency although they have failed for nearly three years to get on the top of the sovereign debt crisis born in Greece.

Rather than launch a broadside at S&P, German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday said she and her fellow leaders must act more swiftly to impose common fiscal rules and get a permanent rescue fund up and running.

"Although nobody is excited about the S&P decision, the step may actually help to get a quick agreement on the fiscal compact," a German government official said.

While not expecting a euro zone break up, S&P blamed its leaders for focusing too much on cutting debts and not sufficiently on competitiveness and growth.

The ratings agency, and many economists, say austerity for its own sake will be self-defeating - deepening economic downturns and cutting government revenues needed to lower debt.

"Market participants are worried about a vicious circle in which they tighten, growth weakens, the deficits get bigger despite the efforts to tighten," said Jim O'Neill, chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management.

The concerns were echoed by IMF Deputy Managing Director David Lipton, who said EU action was needed.

"Without.... action, Europe will be swept into a downward spiral of collapsing confidence, stagnant growth and fewer jobs," he said at a conference in Hong Kong on Monday.

Ahead of an EU summit on January 30 which will attempt to alight upon a growth strategy, shuttle diplomacy continues apace this week.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy sees Spain's Mariano Rajoy in Madrid on Monday. Italian premier Mario Monti visits Britain's David Cameron in London on Wednesday, then hosts Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Rome at the end of the week.

Aside from Greece it is Italy, facing massive bond repayments over the next three months, which poses the biggest threat to the euro zone. It was downgraded two notches by S&P.

"More than the moves on France and Austria, which are relatively symbolic and to a large extent reflected in prices already, the Italian downgrade might be key going forward," said Laurent Fransolet at Barclays Capital.

"Italy is at BBB+ now by S&P, but is on watch negative by Fitch and on negative outlook by Moody's and therefore some further downgrades are likely."

The more upbeat view is that, in the end, Europe's leaders will not allow the whole edifice to collapse, despite German and ECB reservations about many of the policy options. But even optimists say uncertainty will reign for some time.

"Some day the markets will wake up and see that Europe is not going to allow a collapse. If they get through the next six months, you can see the tide turning. Sentiment changes very rapidly," said John Fitzgerald of the Economic and Social Research Institute, a Dublin-based think tank, who also sits on the board of the Irish central bank.

Europe is the biggest threat to the global economy, JP Morgan's chief executive Jamie Dimon told German newspaper Die Welt's Sunday edition. "I thought Europe would muddle through. I still believe that," he was quoted as saying.

Lighting Chinese Sky Lanterns Could Set Your Home Insurance a Blaze Warns Swinton

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 01/08/12 -- Swinton, the UK's leading home insurance retailer, is warning homeowners about the dangers of Chinese sky lanterns ahead of the Chinese New Year celebrations.

Chinese lanterns, also known as wishes or flying lanterns, have become increasingly popular in the UK as more people are using the lanterns as a means of celebrating special occasions, however, they carry a significant risk of injury or fire if not used correctly.

The lanterns are fragile and made from paper which is supported by a wire frame and that incorporates a holder at the base for solid fuel heat source. Swinton is urging homeowners to use the lanterns away from the home, as there is a risk of accidents occurring and damage being caused to buildings.

There is a danger that burning lanterns could fall from the sky and potentially land on a roof, shed, conservatory or garden leading to fire damage that may result in a house insurance claim.

Swinton is offering the following safety advice:

-- Must not be used under the influence of alcohol -- Only use in very calm wind conditions and should not be released when winds are above 5mph -- It is easier and safer if two people launch one lantern at a time -- Keep a fire extinguisher or bucket of water nearby -- If the lantern does catch fire extinguish and discard -- Only use lanterns in open spaces, do not use lanterns in confined spaces such as gardens -- Do not launch lanterns in built up residential areas

Steve Chelton, Claims Manager at Swinton said, "Swinton is urging people to find alternative ways of celebrating before deciding to use a Chinese lantern. They look pretty but anything that uses a naked flame should be used with extreme care as the lanterns are made from paper and can burn rapidly. Never use the lanterns in a residential area."

Iowa GOP voters see Romney as best Obama opponent

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won strong support Tuesday from Republicans seeking a candidate who can topple President Barack Obama in November's elections and from those most concerned about the weak economy, according to an entrance poll of GOP voters attending Iowa's presidential caucuses.

Rick Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator, countered with solid backing from tea party supporters, religious voters and those who ranked abortion as their paramount campaign issue.

Each candidate's reservoir of support helped explain a night in which Romney and Santorum were running neck and neck ? and ahead of their four other competitors ? in the year's first votes as Republicans started selecting their presidential nominee.

Running third was Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who scored highly with young voters, independents and people concerned about huge federal budget deficits.

Given a choice of four qualities they wanted in their party's nominee, about 3 in 10 said they wanted someone who could defeat Obama this fall. Forty-nine percent of that group said they were backing Romney, more than twice as many as cited any other candidate.

"I like Santorum's character and values. But I like Romney's experience and record," said Jeff Young, a salesman from Waterloo, Iowa, who said he was split between the two before Tuesday's caucus. "He's best-positioned in the most ways to compete with the other party."

Santorum, whose candidacy surged in recent days while emphasizing family and faith, was leading among those seeking a candidate with strong moral character, with 39 percent picking him. Santorum and Paul, a libertarian, were running about evenly among those who said they wanted a true conservative as their standard bearer.

Nearly 3 in 10 supporters of the conservative tea party movement were supporting Santorum, and about the same proportion of born-again or evangelical voters were also backing him. That gave Santorum a clear lead among both groups, important because each account for about 6 in 10 Iowa GOP caucus goers.

Santorum's recent burst of popularity was spotlighted by the entrance poll, which showed he was backed by a third of all voters who said they made their decisions in recent days ? more than any other contender.

Only about 1 in 7 voters said abortion was the issue that mattered most when they picked a candidate, but an overwhelming 57 percent of them were backing Santorum.

Asked the campaign's top issue, about 4 in 10 named the economy. Romney led among that group with support from about a third of them, underscoring the appeal of his background running an investment company before entering politics and his emphasis during the campaign on his business experience.

Romney entered the caucuses widely viewed as the favorite to ultimately win his party's nomination, and the opinions expressed by voters in Tuesday's entrance poll underscored his strengths and weaknesses in the GOP contests ahead.

Besides his perceived strength as an Obama opponent and among those worried about the economy, Romney was running ahead of his rivals among the 42 percent of Iowa caucus voters who were not born again or evangelical Christians. He was also doing well among those age 65 and up, people earning $100,000 annually or more and the 53 percent who said a business background was more important than government experience to be an effective president.

But only 56 percent of Romney's backers voiced strong support for him, a weaker show of enthusiasm than his other chief rivals. He was also running poorly among those considering themselves very conservative, the most ardent tea party backers and born-again and evangelical voters ? a crucial portion of GOP voters in South Carolina and some other states in upcoming nominating contests.

Paul had the backing of 48 percent of voters under age 30 and nearly as many independents, giving him large leads in both categories. That could be good news for Paul in New Hampshire, where independents represented almost 4 in 10 voters in that state's 2008 GOP presidential primary. Nearly a quarter of Iowa's GOP voters Tuesday were independents, up from 2008, so their proportion in New Hampshire might grow this year as well.

About a third of GOP caucus goers said they were most concerned about budget deficits, and 3 in 10 of them picked Paul, more than any of his rivals.

Romney, Santorum, Paul and Texas Gov. Rick Perry were running roughly evenly among one-fourth of voters who said campaign advertising played an important role in choosing a candidate ? a testament to the millions in TV advertising that blanketed Iowa in the weeks leading up to Tuesday's caucuses.

The survey was conducted for AP and the television networks by Edison Research as voters arrived at 40 randomly selected caucus sites in Iowa. The survey involved interviews with 1,737 caucus-goers and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Great article Wes, I can't wait for him to suit up and play. We were there last night and could tell he was getting a lashing. I respect the kid a ton though, cause he knew he was going to hear it and that attention would be there, but chose to be as close to his team as he could; that takes some cojones!

O?Canada: ?Pro-Israel Jewish politicians in the ring?

I have never enjoyed anything more ? than watching two Israel-Firster Jewish politicians pulling each others? leg.

Montreal?s Mount Royal riding has been Liberal Party stronghold since 1940s. Late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau had represented the riding from 1965 to 1984. Now, the riding has become a battle ground between two Israel-Firster politicians. Former President of Canadian Jewish Congress and Justice Minister and current Liberal MP Irwin Cotler, and Saulie Zajdel, who lost the Mount Royal riding to Irwin Cotler in the last election. Both Colter and Zajdel are Jewish and staunch supporter of the Zionist entity. The Jews in the riding constitute 45% of those who vote. In 2009, both had blasted their fellow Zionist Jew, South African judge Richard Goldstone for blaming Israel for committing crimes against humainty during the Dec-Jan 2009 Gazzah invasion.

Saulie Zajdel, like his boss, Conservative Party Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, believes that the entire world revolves around Israel. Stephen Harper is one of the two Canadian Islamophobes listed on Israel Hasbara Committee. In September 2011 ? Harper in an exclusive interview told CBC chief correspondent Peter Mansbridge on The National Thursday Night that Islamist terrorists pose the greatest threat to the national scurity of Canada. Muslims happen to be Canada?s No.1 religious minority ? over one million.

Currently, the Israel-Firster Conservatives are running a smearing campaign against a Liberal Israel-Firster, MP Irwin Cotler. First it was reported that Irwin Cotler 71 is planning to vacate his parliamentarian seat to be filled by a by-election. Then a smearing flyer was distributed among Cotler?s constituents claiming that he had attended ?the anti-Semitic? Durban I World Conference on Racism in South Africa. In fact, the delegates from the US and Canada had walked out of the conference after it had declared Israel to be racist entity. Interestingly, Canadian Jewish professor Diana Ralph (Carleton University) wrote: ?The only States which walked out, to their shame, were Israel and United States?.

In reponse to Irwin Cotler?s complaint about the smear campaign in the House of Common ? the Speaker Andrew Scheer, the Tory MP from Regina-Qu?Appelle, said that though he was ?entirely sympathetic? to Cotler ? ?I am not able on technical ground to find that a prima facie case of privilege exists in this case,? concluded the Speaker.

Interestingly, Jewish professor Andrew Cohen (Carleton University) wrote an Op-Ed in Ottawa Citizen (December 13, 2011) in support of MP Irwin Colter.

Grandmas and Girl Crushes: 7 Reasons to Watch The Bachelor Premiere (omg!)

The Bachelor has never been ashamed of being the show that is chock-full of tears, crazy catfights, steamy hot tub scenes and cheesy one-liners. But in its 16th season (premiering Monday at 8/7c), the ABC reality his is about to take the shameless drama up a notch. (Have you seen this preview?) Still not convinced? Here are our seven more reasons to tune in to this season's "journey of love."

1. Bachelor Ben plays piano: It's definitely sexy watching winemaker Ben make some music, even if it is David Gray's cheese-tastic "This Year's Love."

VIDEO: Bikinis, bleeps and Ben's bare butt! Watch the preview of The Bachelor

2. Amazing entrances: Some of the women stop at nothing to set themselves apart in their first meeting with Ben. Among our favorites is Lindzi's arrival on a horse (watch the clip below). One lady walks in without saying a word, while another makes her first impression by sanitizing our Bachelor. Whatever works!

3. Girl-on-girl action: One of the contestants develops a big crush on the first night ? and it's not on Ben.

4. A bathroom breakdown: Yes, we've seen it before, but never has one of the ladies actually cried so hard on the first night that she practically misses the whole thing. (Though it's not probably not as bad as passing out like this guy did.)

VIDEO: Bachelorette's first pair offer their advice for being a successful reality TV couple

5. T.M.I alert! Nebraskan contestant Amber T. could have just told Ben she is a tomboy. She didn't have to, for example, share that she likes to eat cow testicles with her dad.

6. It's a family affair: How can Ben send someone home after meeting her grandma? That's no doubt why Brittney brought along her Grandma Sheryl. A+ for original strategy.

7. Rapping: As you can see in this clip, Emily shows Ben her rapping skills and even manages to squeeze in a lyric about get her profession, epidemiology. The only thing funnier than Emily's tune is Ben's awkward seal-clap response.?

Are you going to tune in?

Watch Lindzi's entrance below and make sure to check back soon for our video interview with Ben about Night 1!

Chargers end Raiders playoff hopes with 38-26 win (AP)

OAKLAND, Calif. ? Philip Rivers threw three touchdown passes and Richard Goodman returned a kickoff 105 yards for another score as the San Diego Chargers ended Oakland's playoff hopes by beating the Raiders 38-26 on Sunday.

The Raiders (8-8) went into the final day of the season needing to win and get help to end an eight-year playoff drought. They got the assistance they needed when Denver (8-8) lost 7-3 at home to Kansas City but were unable to do their part by beating the Chargers (8-8). The Broncos won the division based on record versus common opponents.

The Chargers could only celebrate playing the role of spoiler in what may have been coach Norv Turner's final game in San Diego.

Doc's Talk: War Games, An Energy Crisis, and the Iranian Threat

Mike Brownfield

December 30, 2011

A picture released by Fars News Agency on December 29, 2011, shows a U.S aircraft carrier spotted in an area of the Iranian navy ongoing maneuver zone on the Sea of Oman, near the Strait of Hormuz in southern Iran. UPI/ Abdollah Arab Koohsar/Fars News

The Strait of Hormuz lies between Iran and the United Arab Emirates, providing passage for some 15.5 million barrels of crude oil per day, amounting to one third of the world?s seaborne oil shipments. In a word, it is a 34-mile-wide chokepoint, making Iran?s threat this week to shut down the strait all the more serious for the global community. The Iranian regime?s provocative warnings came on Tuesday from Iranian First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi who threatened to close the strait if Iran faces sanctions for its nuclear ambitions. And Wednesday, Iran?s top naval commander Habibollah Sayyari said, ?Closing the Strait of Hormuz for Iran?s armed forces is really easy ? or, as Iranians say, it will be easier than drinking a glass of water.?

Iran?s closing of the strait ? and its economic ramifications ? is a scenario that has been contemplated before. From December 2006 to March 2007, Heritage Foundation scholars conducted a computer simula?tion and gaming exercise that examined the likely economic and policy consequences of a major oil disruption in the Persian Gulf. Specifically, the war game was based on a scenario in which Iran began blockading the Strait of Hormuz in January 2007.

What did they find? Based on their modeling, if Iran succeeded in fully blockading the strait for up to one week, Americans would see a massive spike in oil prices, a one-quarter drop in GDP of $161 billion, the loss of one million jobs, and a drop of real disposable personal income costing more than $260 billion.

With those threats at hand, the scholars recommended a series of steps to manage the theoretical blockade and its worldwide economic consequences:

A focused but restrained use of military power oriented toward objectives that address vital national interests would demonstrate U.S. determination to uphold freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, help to calm global markets, and reassure American consumers, and measures liberalizing energy policies and rolling back regulatory restrictions would allow the marketplace to work to meet global energy needs.

At the time this war game analysis was conducted, the scholars described why a potential blockage of the Strait of Hormuz would be such a significant threat. Their words ring true today. They looked back to the energy crises during the Arab oil embargo in 1973-1974 and the Iranian revolution in 1978-1979 ? both of which led to fuel shortages, long gas lines, gasoline rationing, high inflation, and energy-related dam?age to the overall economy.

In those instances, they wrote, America suffered not only as a result of the changes in global oil supply, but also because of policies emanating from Washington:

At almost every turn, Washington policymakers exacerbated the already challenging energy situation with their own policy blunders. The federal government?s newly created maze of economic and environmental regulations and implementing agencies greatly hampered domestic energy supplies and limited the private sector?s ability to respond to events.

In retrospect, the U.S. government probably caused at least as much harm as any foreign entity did. Much of the energy crisis was self-inflicted by bad decisions made in Washington. The errors of the 1970s should serve as a cautionary tale as Amer?ica again faces similar energy challenges.

Today, Washington is throwing up similar roadblocks to energy independence. President Barack Obama has postponed a decision on the Keystone XL pipeline, which would transport 700,000 barrels of oil per day from Canada to refineries in Texas, and give a major boost to the U.S. economy. Meanwhile, his Administration has blocked access to shale resources and slowed down and even halted offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, which supplies 30 percent of domestic oil production. And the Environmental Protection Agency is imposing new, costly regulations on energy production. And all of this comes as Iran is threatening to cut off a quarter of the world?s energy supply.

As Heritage?s war game analysis showed, there are things America can do to respond to such provocations from Tehran, but no actions can totally eliminate the economic consequences. However, there are things Washington can and should do today to help America become less dependent on the Middle East for its energy and soften the blow should Iran choose to lash out at the West. America?s security depends on it.

LG to sell 55-inch TV using new ultra-thin tech (AP)

NEW YORK ? For flat-panel TVs, the choice for years has been between plasma and LCD. In the coming year, there'll be another choice, at least for those prepared to spend big.

LG Electronics Inc. says it's planning to sell a 55-inch set based on organic light-emitting diodes, or OLEDs. The Korean company is set to show it off at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which starts Jan. 10.

Samsung Electronics Co., LG's Korean rival, will also reveal a nearly market-ready OLED TV at the show, according to three people with knowledge of the matter. They spoke on condition of anonymity because Samsung has yet to make an announcement. Its website says CES announcements will come Jan. 9.

Tim Alessi, director of home electronics development at LG's USA arm, said its set will likely go on sale in the fourth quarter. The company isn't revealing the price.

Paul Gagnon, an analyst at DisplaySearch, estimates that OLED sets will start out above $5,000.

The screen technology is in use in high-end smartphones and provides deeply saturated colors and high contrast. However, it's been very difficult to make larger screens with consistent results. In late 2007, Sony Corp. started selling an 11-inch OLED TV for about $2,500, but it never followed it up with a bigger model.

Since then, LG and Samsung have shown prototype OLED TVs at the annual CES show, but haven't revealed any marketing plans.

Apart from providing improved picture quality, OLED TVs can be very thin. LG's set will be 4 millimeters thick (3/16ths of an inch) and weight 16.5 pounds.

Charter Communications completed a $927 million debt tender, while it also acquired $200 million worth of stock and agreed to purchase an additional $321 million of shares in private transactions, the company announced Thursday.

The MSO?s previously announced cash tender offers for notes due 2012, 2014 and 2016 for debt securities up to $1 billion expired Dec. 28. Charter paid $407 million for the 2012 notes and $234 million for the 2014 notes, the company said. Investors offered $669.4 million in 2016 notes of which Charter accepted $286 million.

Under the share repurchase program, announced Aug. 9, 2011, Charter acquired approximately 4.125 million shares of Class A common stock for a total of $200 million, or an average of $48.48 per share.

In addition, Charter agreed to purchase an additional 5.891 million shares in privately negotiated transactions for an average of $54.46 per share. The company entered into a stock repurchase agreement with an unidentified shareholder to purchase 750,000 shares at $55.18, and subsequently agreed to acquire an aggregate of 5.141 million shares from certain funds affiliated with Oaktree Capital Management and Apollo Management Holdings at the price of $54.35 per share.

In total, in 2011 Charter will have repurchased a total of 14.5 million shares, or 12.7% of its outstanding shares at the beginning of the year. According to the company, its leverage ratio would have been 4.8 times net debt to the last 12 months of earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) on a pro-forma basis as of Sept. 30, 2011.

?The repurchases demonstrate Charter?s and the board?s confidence about the company?s future,? outgoing Charter president and CEO Mike Lovett said in a statement. ?In 2011 we have repurchased 12.7% of the Company?s outstanding shares at an average price of $50.17, which reflects a series of strategic opportunities to deliver value to our shareholders.?

Charter last week named Tom Rutledge, formerly chief operating officer of Cablevision Systems, to be president and CEO effective Feb. 13, 2012.

Following the stock repurchases, according to Charter, Apollo will continue to own 33.541 million shares of Class A common stock representing 33.26% of outstanding shares and Oaktree will hold 16.615 million shares, or 16.56% of outstanding shares. The company expects to close the privately negotiated transactions by Friday (Dec. 30).
