Lighting Chinese Sky Lanterns Could Set Your Home Insurance a Blaze Warns Swinton

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 01/08/12 -- Swinton, the UK's leading home insurance retailer, is warning homeowners about the dangers of Chinese sky lanterns ahead of the Chinese New Year celebrations.

Chinese lanterns, also known as wishes or flying lanterns, have become increasingly popular in the UK as more people are using the lanterns as a means of celebrating special occasions, however, they carry a significant risk of injury or fire if not used correctly.

The lanterns are fragile and made from paper which is supported by a wire frame and that incorporates a holder at the base for solid fuel heat source. Swinton is urging homeowners to use the lanterns away from the home, as there is a risk of accidents occurring and damage being caused to buildings.

There is a danger that burning lanterns could fall from the sky and potentially land on a roof, shed, conservatory or garden leading to fire damage that may result in a house insurance claim.

Swinton is offering the following safety advice:

-- Must not be used under the influence of alcohol -- Only use in very calm wind conditions and should not be released when winds are above 5mph -- It is easier and safer if two people launch one lantern at a time -- Keep a fire extinguisher or bucket of water nearby -- If the lantern does catch fire extinguish and discard -- Only use lanterns in open spaces, do not use lanterns in confined spaces such as gardens -- Do not launch lanterns in built up residential areas

Steve Chelton, Claims Manager at Swinton said, "Swinton is urging people to find alternative ways of celebrating before deciding to use a Chinese lantern. They look pretty but anything that uses a naked flame should be used with extreme care as the lanterns are made from paper and can burn rapidly. Never use the lanterns in a residential area."
